- I have been in Real Estate continually for over 10 years in Texas. During the last three years I was an arbitrator for property tax authorized by the Comptroller of Public Accounts. This was interesting but frustrating at the same time because, although I like the idea of helping homeowners and business owners find a true value for their property, it became clear that the property owner was at the mercy of the appraisal district when it came to finding evidence that could be used in their case. I wanted so many times to tell the property owner what they needed to do and how to present their case but was prevented in doing so because of the arbitrator being a neutral party. Only in a few cases did the property owner have their act together and present a well documented argument. We, at the Property Tax Watchdog, would like to reverse this trend and give the home owner every advantage of success. I then looked into representing property owners before the appraisal district and presenting sound viable evidence in their protest. I have received reductions almost every time I went before an appraisal review board with verifiable evidence of the property’s true worth. Sometimes homeowners just want to protest even though I showed them that perhaps the appraisal district was correct in their evaluation. This is acceptable with us, but be aware that your chance of reducing your value is slim. So we are ready and anticipating that many homeowners will take advantage of our reports and protest on their own or at least find out if their property is valued equal to others in their neighborhood.
